Disney announces 2013 licensing opportunities

At its recently held bi-annual partners meeting, Disney Consumer Products revealed its spring/summer 2013 licensing opportunities. While detailing its integrated marketing and retail strategies, the licensor outlined support for its evergreen properties like Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and Disney Princess.

Apart from the usual favourites, Disney also showed off its mobile app – “Where’s My Water?” which has achieved number one spots on the App Store in over 30 countries. The company also championed its kid’s virtual world Club Penguin and Sofia the First, a new film which is set to be followed by an animated TV series.

Raft of licensing deals for Pajanimals

The Jim Henson Company has recently signed many licensing deals for its preschool brand Pajanimals, which airs as a live-action puppetry TV series on 24-hour US preschool channel Sprout.

The US and Canadian home entertainment licensing agreement for NCircle Entertainment (with The Jim Henson Company) has been extended for new full episodes and the first Pajanimals DVD will also set to be released in May 2012.

Other licensees include SaraMax Apparel Group (for sleepwear for fall 2012 featuring characters Sweetpea Sue, Squacky, CowBella and Apollo); parade balloon company, StarBound Entertainment; California Costumes (Halloween toddler costumes for fall 2012); and LightHeaded Beds (illuminated graphic children’s headboards for spring 2012).

Poppy Cat on way to France

The series, based on the international best-selling books by Lara Jones, had its global premiere on Nick Jr UK in May 2011 and continues a raft of sales, having been sold to many broadcasters across the world. Poppy Cat is expected to launch on France 5, a TV channel, from July 2012.

The series has already been placed with Disney Junior in Spain and Latin America, Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, e-vision (UAE), SVT (Sweden), S4C (Wales), EBS Korea, OKTO Singapore, Nickelodeon Australia, TVO (Canada), Knowledge Network (Canada), NRK (Norway), RTÉ (Ireland) and most recently CITV (UK).

Eleven licensees have been signed to date in the UK including toyco Golden Bear for plush, plastics and arts and crafts products launching in autumn 2012. JLG has been appointed as the licensing agent for North America and a number of other agents are in discussion to represent Poppy Cat around the world, including France.

Peppa grabs top slot for the pre-school toy licences

As per the figures released by NPD, based on the total sales of licensed toys from 2012 to 2011, The Entertainment One (eOne) character ranked number one in pre-school toys, publishing and DVDs. eOne licensing represents top pre-school brands including Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom.

Sales of Peppa Pig were strong across the board last year with sales of over five million units. Publishing partner Ladybird has also reported sales figures which position Peppa as the number one pre-school publishing license.

India time for league soccer action

For the first time ever, Indian football is getting its own franchise based soccer league. It’s the time of the year to gear up for the Premier League Soccer (PLS), given the success of IPL in the country.

The auction process for international players has already attracted big money and the matches for the upcoming season shall wrap up by June 5, 2012.

The brainchild of Indian Football Association and Kolkata based Celebrity Management Group; the initiative marks the beginning of franchise based soccer league in India. It has already mopped up a little over Rs 100 crore through the sale of five franchises and international players auction.

Bhaswar Goswami, Executive Director, Celebrity Management Group shared that the opportunity for licensing and merchandising around the same is huge in the country and is likely to show some exciting results in the times to come.

Action at Mattel

Mattel has recently concluded its Hit acquisition from consortium of funds led by Apax Partners for $680 million in cash. The acquisition implies the combination of Mattel’s global marketing, distribution and brand management capabilities with Hit Entertainment’s global programming and licensing expertise to accelerate growth of the combined portfolio.

Also, former Disney Consumer Products Executive – Edward Catchpole has joined Hit Brands as Senior Vice President. He will head up the UK office with geographical responsibility for Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Japan and will report into executive vice president, Fisher-Price, David Allmark.

Deals renewed for "It's Happy Bunny"

CopCorp Licensing has recently appointed two new sub-agents for the "It's Happy Bunny" brand, while also renewing deals with three existing partners – MJA Licensing (France), Sinerji (Turkey) and Plus Licens (Eastern Europe).

While Angelotti Licensing has been appointed to manage the licensing programme for the brand in Brazil, BN Licensing has picked up the rights for Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. The new partners on board have joined the growing list of licensees already on board in categories like greeting cards, posters, accessories, apparel, key chains and confectionery.

eFX bags rights for Marvel Universe line

eFX, Prop replica and collectable specialist, is set to unveil a new line based on the film and comic characters in the Marvel Universe in the first quarter of 2012. The company has bagged the worldwide rights to create Marvel collectables.

The initial collection is expected to include a Captain America shield, Thor's hammer and a full-scale Iron Man Mark V mask. In addition to prop replicas and high-end collectables, the offerings will also include a series of items inspired by the Marvel characters and properties. Prices are expected to range from $49 to above $1,500.

China to get famous Disney characters

Walt Disney Co is set to open its first store in China in fall 2012 as Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh are setting up shop in China. The company is committed to opening from 25 to 40 stores in China during the next three years.

Disney is now looking beyond the United States, Europe and other developed markets for new sources of revenue. With the launch of Shanghai Disneyland theme park in April 2011, China has undoubtedly become very important for the company’s overall plans.

Given the presence of the licensing division already in China, there is affinity for the Disney characters. However, according to sources, the product assortment is definitely customised as per the customers’ tastes and expectations.

For instance, Disney's China stores are expected to carry more products under the Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh labels and fewer Princess Dolls – figurines of female characters from the company's various movies.

MTV’s attempt to extend its appeal

MTV India, the music channel run in India by Viacom 18, has recently lent its brand name for product categories like intimate wear such as lingerie, men's innerwear and even condoms. The initiative is set to increase the brand’s appeal among its core youth audience. This is the first time that the music channel has associated with such products anywhere in the world. The products are set to roll out in the market over the next three months.

Viacom18's consumer products division has tied up with Kamasutra condoms, Bwitch lingerie and Crusoe men's innerwear. While condoms and lingerie will be co-branded with MTV, the men's innerwear will sport the name of MTV's popular reality show, Roadies.

The range of lingerie and men's innerwear will be available in metros, while co-branded condoms are likely to be released across the country in various retail formats.

Kelme to enter Indian market

Kelme, a sportswear and fashion label from Spain has recently inked a licensing and distribution agreement with Ghaziabad-based Global Overseas to foray in the Indian market. Kelme intends to launch 10 outlets in the first year of its penetration, with their first outlet in Delhi.

Global Overseas is a division of Singapore-based Sports Fashion and Kelme – a New Millennium Sports venture, has partnered with Sports Fashion for the Asia-Pacific region.

Kelme, which otherwise follows a licensing and distribution model, has also included he deal with domestic production with its deal with Global Overseas.

HIT’s top executives to quit

HIT Entertainment, Children’s entertainment producer and rights-owner which was acquired by Mattel in October 2011 for US$680 million, is set to lose its President and CEO, Jeffrey Dunn, and COO Sangeeta Desai, following the closing of the acquisition in early 2012.

Having led the company since March 2008, Dunn will exit immediately after the acquisition is closed, and Desai, who has been HIT’s COO since 2009, is set to leave after a short transition period.

Dunn and Desa have contributed to the growth of the company’s brands including preschool IP Thomas & Friends, Mike the Knight and preschool brand Fireman Sam.

THQ not game for kid’s properties

THQ Inc., A well known American developer and publisher of video games, recently announced and indicated that it’s losing faith in licensed kids-friendly properties. The company announced that it is set to leave childish things behind in order to concentrate its resources on key franchises like Company of Heroes, Saints Row and the upcoming UFC Undisputed 3.

The company aims at accelerating its digital revenues, extending and supporting key console launches, and intends to achieve the same by indulging in dedicated digital properties for emerging platforms.

However, THQ will continue to sell some of its previously released titles. The titles are not disclosed but its catalogue includes games based on Spongebob Squarepants, Disney Princesses, Barbie, and Dreamworks Animation properties including Puss in Boots, The Penguins of Madagascar and Rio.

Mind Candy expands deal for Vivid's Moshi Monsters

Mind Candy, one of the well known social online gaming companies and global developers, is set to bag the next IP across toys, games and puzzles for the global marketplace. In lines with the agreement, there will be a roll out for the Moshi Monsters toy, games and puzzle lines across new international territories, including Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria in the coming months as local language adaptations of the game are activated. Vivid is also set to work as a global partner for the soon-to-be-announced new IP from Mind Candy.

Danbury to get new Disney store

Disney recently announced that it is set to open the first of its newly designed stores in Connecticut inside Danbury Fair mall. According to a press release issued by the Disney Store, the retail merchandising arm of Disney Consumer Products, the store will open this summer.

The release also revealed that the company is expected to open stores in 12 countries, including China and Italy. The initiative has surely set a new standard for a sociality retailer. The company’s momentum is set to increase in the times to come, given that the opening includes premiere locations like US and Canada.

Addition for Hallmark portfolio

Hallmark, one of the largest manufacturers of greeting cards in the United States, has recently added to its growing portfolio of licensed brands by inking deals with Liberty Art Fabrics x Hello Kitty.

The partnership with Fluid World (the official UK licensing agency for Sanrio) includes Hello Kitty greeting cards, wrap, tags, gift bags, etc, embraced in Liberty Art Fabric signature style. The exclusive range is set to incorporate vintage Hello Kitty design with new prints released each year. Liberty Art Fabrics is set to make it a fashionable must have collection.

The range launches this March and will be available in select card specialists, department stores and online.

More licensees for Mike the Knight

Based in UK, HIT Entertainment is one of the world’s leading independent children's entertainment producers and rights-owners. The company has recently inked four licensees for its latest preschool property, Mike the Knight.

The list of licensees include Egmont (annuals for fall 2012), Publications International (sound books in the UK, Germany, Spain and Portugal for fall 2012), Grosvenor (UK toiletries, dental care for December 2012), and Finsbury Foods (UK cakes for spring 2013). This recent addition of licensees has brought the IP’s total number of licensees to 30.

The series starring the young knight in training, produced by HIT and Nelvana Studio debuted on CBeebies, Treehouse and TF1three months ago. The series is set to launch in 10 new countries including Australia (ABC), Sweden (SVT), Norway (NRK) and Finland (YLE).

Action at Toy Fair

A wide range of products for V&S Entertainment's pre-school property – Everything's Rosie, is being showcased at Toy Fair, London's Olympia this week.

Vivid Imaginations will be highlighting its key products – Playground Play-set, posable figurines and the Chatty Phone as well as Let's Dance Rosie. For autumn/winter, Vivid will be showing the Pink Playhouse Play-set.

Also, Jumbo Games will be displaying a new 3D game – Raggles the Reporter, due to launch in the summer, in addition to a new Everything's Rosie Lotto Game.

Due for an autumn/winter launch, HTI has a line of wheeled toys, while Worlds Apart will be revealing a range of products too. To sum up, Gbeye will be exhibiting its new Everything's Rosie posters.

TRU attains majority stake in Asia

Toys 'R' Us, a toy and juvenile-products retailer headquartered in United States and Li & Fung Retailing have recently joined hands for expanding the Toys 'R' Us business in the Southeast Asia and Greater China region. As a result, the current ownership of the Toys ‘R’ Us licensed operations throughout Asia will become 70 per cent and the remaining 30 per cent will be owned by LI & Fung Retailing. Toys ‘R’ Us will be controlling the stores, given that the Asia operations include more than 100 stores and offices across nine markets in the region.

The deal is set to increase the number of TRU’s wholly owned international locations by 17 per cent. The joint venture will also include the ownership and overview of office operations in seven markets, including the regional TRU headquarters in Hong Kong.

Celebrating five years of Ben 10

Five years of its Ben 10 brand are being celebrated in the Asia Pacific region by Cartoon Network, as the firm eyes growth opportunities throughout 2012. The firm is expecting to sell over 300 million products across Asia Pacific this year.

Since its launch, the property has notched up US $1 billion in toy sales globally, witnessing the sale of five million Ben 10 toys alone in Asia Pacific last year. Dulce Lim-Chen, VP, Cartoon Network Enterprises Asia Pacific was joined by Charles Riotto, President, LIMA and Angela Ho, Senior Service Promotion Manager, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, at the Hong Kong International Licensing Show, to mark the five-year milestone.

CNE expands in Asia Pacific

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) has gushed in the New Year by expanding its licensing portfolio for the Asia Pacific region. The line-up includes The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time with Finn and Jake and Regular Show, which complement its Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls franchises. The characters go way beyond the television screens these days and consumers look forward to connect with them in their daily lives as well.

Also, it is worth mentioning that CNE will be opening family entertainment centres, themed zones and learning spaces across the Asia Pacific region in the times to come.

Nokia Store gets Sesame Street apps

Two interactive book apps have been recently rolled out for Nokia’s new Symbian smartphones. As a result of the Sesame Workshop’s launch for the first two apps for the devices, users can now interact with their favourite friends from Sesame Street.

Interestingly, both the applications – The 100th Day of School and Big Block Party – offer Elmo speaking to readers while they read the stories and also interacts by asking story related questions. The learning exercise becomes very engaging in this way. The application also features read-aloud adult narration and text highlighting to help new readers.

The 100th Day of School app is available as a free download and Big Block Party is priced at $1.99.

SpongeBob BTS range in India

Back to school (BTS) range for one of the most adorable Nicktoons – SpongeBob SquarePants, has recently been launched in the country. The announcement came from Nick India, the leading kid’s entertainment channel and Big Bazaar, India’s largest Hypermarket chain and part of Future Group. The range is available at all Big Bazaar outlets across the country.

The popular television series exploits the adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants and his various friends in the underwater city of ‘Bikini Bottom’. Taking inspiration from this theme, the ‘SpongeBob SquarePants – Back to School’ product range includes colour pencils, crayons, erasers, sharpeners, sketch pens, pencil pouches, oil pastels, compass boxes, coin bank, combi packs etc. The product range, priced between Rs 25/- and Rs 149/-, is designed keeping in mind the latest trends and styles that are popular amongst kids. Nick India has licensed the category to B Vishal Corporation to distribute the products across all Big Bazaar stores.

Launch of "Disney Junior" channel

Disney recently announced that it is set to launch Disney Junior, a 24-hour basic cable and satellite TV channel targeting kids (age group of 2 to 7), on March 23, 2012. The announcement came at the Television Critics Association winter press tour where Disney also announced plans for an all-Marvel block on Disney XD.

The Disney Channel's Disney Junior daily programming block will continue (which started in February, 2010). However, Disney Junior will air through cable and satellite providers including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Bright House Networks and Verizon, among others.

As part of the programme schedule, "Ultimate Spider-Man" will anchor the new Marvel block, which will is set to debut April 1. The block will also feature the series return of "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes." Let’s watch out for other details when the channel actually releases in the month of March!

New COO for ACK-Media

ACK-Media recently announced the appointment of Manas Mohan as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) with effect from January 1, 2012. Mohan has climbed up the corporate ladder, moving up from his earlier role as Head - Direct to Customer for ACK Media.

Mohan’s new role implies him overseeing the direct marketing and E-commerce business, heading the National Geographic business, advertising sales and strategic leadership of the Brand- Marketing Function including licensing and merchandising.

Mohan possesses over 17 years of experience across marketing, communications, media, advertising and branding. He has done his MBA from Lucknow and an advanced management diploma from ISB, Hyderabad.

Wiesner Products’ foray into India

New York-based Wiesner Products Inc (WPI) has recently entered India by setting up its subsidiary to sell a range of consumer items such as footwear, hosiery, accessories, apparel and home goods at retail stores. The Company already has prior experience in the market of US and China.
WPI manufactures and sells branded products, licensed items and private labels. It also holds licenses for merchandise of brands such as Aerosoles, Nickelodeon, MGA, Marvel, The Sharper Image, WWE and Warner Brothers.
Wiesner Worldwide Kreations (WWK), the Indian arm of WPI, has already tied up with leading retail stores in the country like Hypercity, Home Centre and Westside and is looking forward to strengthening operations and ties with more such stores in India. The company has been active in the US for over 40 years now and is now looking at offering its international products to consumers in India.

Electrolux Global Brand Licensing expands in the Green Energy sector

Electrolux Global Brand Licensing and Elec Tech International have recently inked a licensing contract for the brand – AEG in the LED Light bulbs category for consumers. The contract not only increases the presence of the AEG brand in the Green Energy sector but also generates brand awareness for Electrolux.
With products such as inverters for solar parks and turbines for wind energy, Electrolux Global Brand Licensing adds another licensee in the Green Energy sector. Elec Tech International (ETI), based in Hong Kong and China, plans to invest heavily in the Green Energy sector, with a focus on manufacturing of LED lighting.
Through this license agreement, the brand AEG will play the leading role in the high end range of the consumer LED light bulb market. The first AEG LED bulbs are expected to reach the market in the beginning of 2012.

Digital platform by Liquid Comics

Liquid Comics has recently launched its new digital platform – Graphic India, which is an endeavour to promote comic books in India, showcasing young artists and writers in the country. The site features online comics, interviews, how-to tips for aspiring creators, contests, and social media links.
Liquid Comics began life as Virgin Comics and announced ambitious plans for a line of comics based on Hindu cosmology and heroic Indian legend and literature. Liquid’s current owners bought out Virgin in 2008 and there onwards more emphasis has been laid on digital content, apps and content-licensing deals.
Given that tablet devices and e-readers are increasingly proving to be an ideal platform, U.S. comics are undoubtedly making the transition from paper to digital in a big way. Like most comics companies, Liquid also features properties licensed from other media and their big bet is on Elvis Presley. Let’s see what is in store for Graphic India!

Italy and India deals for Nick

Nickelodeon Consumer Products has recently inked major back-to-school deals for SpongeBob SquarePants in Italy and India. Italian licensee – Accademia is set to create a line for all school-age children and teens for the 2012 back-to-school season. The collection will be sold through boutiques and specialty stores. The products will include backpacks, binders, book covers, book labels, correction tape, day planners, organisers, diaries, erasers, folders, geometry sets, luggage, notebooks, note cards, paper clips, pencil cases and pouches, pencils, pens, rulers, sharpeners, wallets and writing paper.

Go Cheese bags prestigious Promax award

Go Cheezos Tom and Jerry campaign created by Warner Bros and Dream Works Entertainment recently won the Gold in the ‘Best Brand- Integration Promo Category’ at the Promax / BDA Awards in Singapore. ZOOP launches ‘Puss in Boots collection’

Indus League brings Manchester United Merchandise to India

Zapak’s Toys Biz to merge with Reliance Home Video

Reliance Entertainment, owned by Reliance ADAG, recently announced that it is set to merge the toys and games business of Zapak Games with Reliance Home Video as a part of the company’s effort to reorganise operations for more synergy. According to a company statement, the new entity will be called Reliance Home Video and Games, and that the move will “ensure growth of both home video and games business with enhanced funding, improved infrastructure and larger product offerings.”

Zapak Games distributes merchandise, games and toys from leading international toys and gaming companies like Moose, Spinmasters, Codemasters, Jakks Pacific, Crayola and others, while Reliance Home Video distributes both Indian and Hollywood films. Reliance Home Video claims to be the exclusive licensee to Warner Bros, Paramount Studios, Universal Studios and Dreamworks for all their new and catalogue films.

MTV launches ‘Roadies Footgear’

The new range of ‘MTV Roadies Shoes’ was recently launched in Delhi by Mochi and MTV. The Roadies range is available in more than 55 Mochi – The Shoe Shoppe stores across India.

Brand Licensing India 2011 was recently held at the Hotel Ashok, New Delhi, on 2nd – 3rd December, 2011. English football clubs cash in on licensing

Several English football clubs are entering into licensing arrangements with Indian partners to deliver a complete football lifestyle experience.

Future Group-owned Indus League Clothing has recently tied up with Manchester United Merchandising (MUML) to set up two exclusive ManU branded stores at the Palladium Mall in Mumbai and Forum Mall in Kolkata. These exclusive stores will be replicas of ManU's store in Old Trafford that will retail official team jerseys, home T-shirts, and hoodies for adults and kids. There will also be a range of accessories including caps, fridge magnets and sippers.

Indian poultry chain- Venky's that bought English football club Blackburn Rovers is also planning to launch its club merchandise. Also, Noida-based Carnoustie Group, which has signed a deal with English club Liverpool FC to set up a football academy in Noida, is planning to launch exclusive Liverpool merchandise.

The Jungle Book to be marketed at the largest US Toy Fair

DQE, the animation, gaming, live action entertainment production and distribution Company, recently announced that SMC Entertainment, its rights partner in North America, Australia and South Africa, is to market The Jungle Book at Kidscreen Summit and the New York Toy Fair in February 2012.

SMC Entertainment (SMC) is the recently launched entertainment and brand management division of global consumer products manufacturer Sun-Mate Corporation.

SMC acquired all North American TV, home entertainment, licensing and merchandising rights, as well as all promotional rights, to the 52 x 11’ episode CGI-animated Jungle Book television series, in addition to a one-hour feature from DQ Entertainment International Limited (DQE International). In addition, SMC has acquired, for The Jungle Book, the master toy rights for Australia and New Zealand and licensing and merchandising rights for South Africa.

‘Me to You’ Christmas CD lined up by EMI

This Christmas, a two-CD festive compilation is set to be launched by EMI, featuring the popular ‘Me to You’ brand. Carte Blanche Greetings (CBG) is continuing its successful partnership with EMI, releasing Me to You at Christmas, which includes about 40 festive songs.

CBG has previously worked with EMI on ‘Me to You with Love’, which reached number two in the compilation album charts in February. Mattel extends partnership for DC Comics

Mattel has recently signed a new multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) for all characters from the universe of DC Comics. The terms of the deal imply Mattel having unprecedented access to the complete DC Comics vault of characters, which includes over a thousand Super Heroes and Super Villains, such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Joker. The agreement also includes characters such as The Flash, Aquaman, Shazam, Green Arrow and Hawkman.

As part of the ongoing relationship, Mattel is set to develop toy lines for two of Warner Bros.’ most highly anticipated theatrical releases – on July 20, 2012, The Dark Knight Rises, and on June 14, 2013, Man of Steel.

Saban Brands’ exclusive licensing agent in India

Continuing the global expansion of Saban Brands’ hit ‘Power Rangers Samurai’ franchise, the Company has named Dream Theatre Private Limited as the exclusive Licensing Agent in India for the brand. ‘Brands with Influence’ bags Egmont deal

‘Brands with Influence’ has recently secured a new contract with Egmont UK for a number of its classic comic and magazine brands. The deal includes properties like Roy of the Rovers, Battle, Misty and Whizzer and Chips.

Egmont Publishing feels that the time is just right to bring these titles and brands back to life through a strategic licensing programme. Brands with Influence will be working closely with Egmont in times to come, to finalise the implementation plans, extending the brand offerings through a mix of licensed consumer products.

HarperCollins renews Hello Kitty deal

HarperCollins has recently extended its deal for Hello Kitty Publishing, with the renewed agreement including digital rights as well. As per the deal, the successful younger range will continue, which includes sticker, activity and doodle and tween fashion and friendship guides.

CBS Consumer Products adds agents

CBS Consumer Products has recently secured licensing representation in Russia and Mexico, inking deals with two new agents. Matrix Video Group and Brand Licensing Central will be handling properties such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Next Top Model, Star Trek and Beverly Hills 90210.

While Matrix Video Group will be responsible for Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia and Turkmenistan, Brand Licensing Central will look after Mexico. It will be the first time working with CBS Consumer Products for both companies.

Mattel to buy Hit Entertainment

US toy maker, Mattel, is close to a £500m deal to buy the children’s media group behind Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine from Apax Partners, the UK buy-out group. Mattel is one of the world’s largest toy companies and is well known for making Barbie dolls.

According to sources, Mattel is in the final stages of negotiations over the purchase of Hit Entertainment, which Apax bought in 2005 for a similar price tag of £489m. The sale of Hit will not include the group’s stake in Sprout, a US children’s channel. However, the development is set to give Mattel yet another opportunity for growth in emerging markets.

Thomas the Tank Engine has become the top-selling pre-school toy for boys in China and is by far the leading performer in Hit’s stable, which also includes Angelina Ballerina, Fireman Sam and Pingu.

It is expected that the group is likely to fold Hit’s assets into its Fisher Price toy division, which already holds licensing rights to some Thomas & Friends toys.

Top earning dead celebrities

Forbes recently published its annual list of the top earning dead celebrities. There were 15 people on the list which implied earnings of $366 milion between October 2010 and October 2011. Michael Jackson took first place in the listing for the second year running; records suggested that the past 12 months, his estate brought in $170 million from sales of his music and his stake in the Sony / ATV catalogue.

According to sources, the new Cirque show - Viva Elvis - helped Elvis Presley to second place on the list with $55 million. Third was Marilyn Monroe ($27 million), followed by Charles Schulz ($25 million), John Lennon ($12 million), Elizabeth Taylor ($12 million), Albert Einstein ($10 million), Theodor Geisel ($9 million), Jimi Hendrix ($7 million), Stieg Larsson ($7 million) and Steve McQueen ($7 million). To ensure a place on the list, a deceased celebrity had to have earned at least $6 million between October 2010 and October 2011. For the list compilation, Forbes spoke to agents, lawyers and other sources to estimate each star's gross earnings.

Brand merchandising in name of F1

Thanks to the country's first ever Formula One race, brand merchandising is at an all time high. Shirts, jackets and even pillow covers inspired by F1 are selling like hot cakes, especially among youth.

Sports merchandising is not a new concept in India, given that brands have tapped the market already by associating with cricket in the recent times.

With F1's debut in the country, Reebok India, Puma and Party Hunterz and Inkfruit.com are happy with the encouraging response to their associated products.

With a view to tap the F1 craze, brands are offering a variety of things from shirts, jackets, caps, trousers to household products like sofa covers and pillows. Reebok, an official sportswear partner for Force India, has dedicated a collection of apparel and accessories inspired by the Force India F1 team.

Also Puma, an official licensing partner for Ferrari and the supplier of team and race wear for Scuderia Ferrari, has come up with a line of apparel, footwear and accessories.

International watch-making company Richard Mille also decided to be a part of the big-buck business and launched a limited edition of Felipe Massa Timepiece specially created for the Indian Grand Prix. The merchandise ranges from anything between Rs250 and Rs2,28,000.

NVCP President leaves

Having recently witnessed an executive turnover season, given the recent high-profile departures of Disney CP’s Andy Mooney and Carolina Lightcap from Disney Channels Worldwide, the latest development has been that Leigh Anne Brodsky, President of Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) is no longer at the company.

According to sources, “Brodsky’s position as president of NVCP “has been eliminated due to a realignment of our consumer products group.” It is also learnt that there are no plans to replace her. The management of the consumer products group is going to be incorporated into ad sales, marketing and digital groups and will no longer operate as a separate vertical line of business. The consumer products group includes oversight of all ancillary activities around multi-billion-dollar properties like SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.

New licensing partners for ‘Baby Jake’

BBC Worldwide has recently announced the publishing and DVD partners for the children’s channel CBeebies’ show ‘Baby Jake’. While books will be developed by Egmont, children’s publishers, 2|entertain will publish DVD products for the new pre-school show. Developed by Darrall Macqueen, ‘Baby Jake’ combines storytelling, humour and a mixture of live action and 2D photographic animation bringing to life the magical imagination of a young child and celebrating the special bond between two young siblings.

BBC Worldwide, who were last month confirmed as the licensing agent for the brand, has secured a raft of partners to develop product programmes including Vivid as the UK master toy company.

Elvis Presley licensed for online game and merchandise

Social and casual game developer and publisher, Entertainment Games, Inc., recently announced the signing of a licensing agreement with Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. (EPE), implying Elvis becoming a character within a soon-to-be launched story-driven online game. Elvis Presley has fans around the world and has sold over one billion records, starred in 33 successful films, and was seen by thousands at record-breaking live concerts.

As per the terms of the agreement, EPE will license to EGAM photographs from the archives at Graceland for its upcoming social game for Facebook, Google+, mobile devices and the open web. Additionally, a variety of Elvis-related, in-game merchandise will also be available for players to purchase.

Electrolux Global Brand Licensing targets Indian Market

Electrolux Global Brand Licensing, which controls the licensing rights to the Electrolux´s brand portfolio, has appointed Capstone Branding to be their partner in the Indian market.

This marks the first time that Electrolux Global Brand Licensing has targeted India. The third party agent was selected for this assignment based on their knowledge and understanding of the market. The multi-year agreement covers the brands AEG and Kelvinator, and is focused on finding suitable partners in key product areas.

BabyFirst expands into Asia

BabyFirst, a US-based educational channel, is expanding its distribution footprint in Asia with new Indonesian and Cambodian launches. The 24/7 commercial-free channel, which is distributed in Asia by HBO, will air on cable and satellite platforms NexMedia, AORA and MegaMedia in Indonesia, and on CEPCO in Cambodia. The Smiley Company has recently partnered with French retail chain Carrefour, in a deal which will imply its emoticon inspired Smiley World brand in its 'Smile, it's back to school / work' being used for the in-store promotion. As a result of the association, Carrefour will be using a host of Smiley World icons to mark out different sections in its stores and car parks as part of the promotion.

The Jones Group recently announced that it has entered into an exclusive, worldwide license agreement with Marchon Eyewear, Inc. for the creation, production, marketing and global distribution of ophthalmic eyewear frames and prescription-ready sunglasses under the Nine West brand. DQE to announce licensing deals in October

Animation content provider, DQ Entertainment (International), is set to announce two multi-million dollar licensing deals with overseas firms in the areas of broadcasting, merchandising and publishing in October ‘2011. The two major deals will be part of nine licensing deals the firm plans to announce at Cannes.

The Hyderabad based firm expects its licensing and merchandising business to outpace its production business in the coming years. The animation and visual effects company also expects to achieve a revenue growth rate of 15-20% for the current financial year.

Consumer Products (WBCP) has recently tied up with Diamond Footcare Udyog Private Limited to launch kids’ footwear products, featuring the Warner Bros. brands of Looney Tunes (including popular characters Bugs Bunny, Tweety, Daffy Duck and Tazmanian Devil), Baby Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry and Scooby-Doo. Disney’s licensing chief abruptly resigns

Andrew P. Mooney, one of the Walt Disney Company’s most senior executives, recently resigned as chairman of the conglomerate’s sprawling consumer products unit.

The loss of Mooney is a significant blow to Disney, given that his accomplishments include significantly improving the quality of Disney merchandise, guiding a promising turnaround at Disney Stores in North America, stretching the Disney brand to include upscale lines of furniture and apparel, among other significant contributions.

Filling Mr. Mooney’s shoes will be difficult and the challenges on the division’s plate include continuing an expansion into infant apparel and merchandise under the banner Disney Baby. Also, the new leader will need to navigate a difficult relationship with Marvel Entertainment which became a Disney unit in 2009.

Archies’ partnership with UNICEF

Gift and greeting cards major, Archies, recently announced that it aims to more than double its India revenues to Rs 400 crore in the next four years. Having recently announced a licensing partnership with UNICEF, the company has geared up for an aggressive expansion programme across the country.

Archies is looking to double its retail presence to around 400 company-owned stores in the next four years, as well as tap modern retail chains for marketing its products. The company expects the sales revenues to touch around Rs 220 crore this fiscal. It currently operates around 500 stores, of which 220 are owned by the company.

As part of the licensing agreement, Archies will produce and distribute UNICEF cards and paper products through 222 outlets in 66 cities and 15 states.

Volkswagen Zubehoer GmbH, the Volkswagen Company that controls all licensing rights to the iconic Volkswagen automobile brand, recently announced their selection of IMG Licensing, a division of global sports, fashion and media company, IMG Worldwide, as their exclusive global consumer product and brand agency for the internationally renowned automobile brand. The multi-year agreement covers all of Volkswagen's licensing interests for the global Volkswagen Licensing Program for Merchandise Products.

Volkswagen has not previously worked with a third party agent for its brand licensing activities and the selection of IMG is the result of a carefully managed one year process. The two companies are working on development plans with the vision of rolling out the first new products during 2012.

Jessica Simpson’s diamond collection

Jessica Simpson is set to become Firestar Diamond’s first celebrity license with the introduction of the ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ collection, slated to hit Zales stores exclusively in October.

Fine jewellery marks Simpson’s 22nd retail category, which already includes shoes, apparel, accessories and fragrances. Offerings are comprised of three groups that include pendants, earrings, rings, bracelets and bangles in gold, silver, diamonds, or a combination of the three. The price range lies between $79 to $999.

The collection has been made keeping her vision in mind, making a collection that’s accessible to all women and girls of different shapes, budgets and tastes.

Tons of goodies at Ra.One website

Shah Rukh Khan's big budget movie, Ra.One is two months away from hitting around 3,000 screens worldwide on Diwali (October 26th). For the first time ever, an Indian film is coming out with a huge amount of merchandising and pre-release swag which is something that is a practice in the West, but is still not done extensively in India.

Ra.One website recently opened with tons of info on the film, its characters, and a store for merchandise which included action figures, signature limited edition figure, an articulated figure, the H.A.R.T. module and a frisbee. They also have a special section just for Ra.One school supplies, pencil boxes and such.

IPL mania and trading cards

Cricket Attax, the official IPL trading cards game is a hit with children for whom the game means much more than playing in the field. Topps Sports and Entertainment launched the card game through an eight year licensing deal with the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to sources, the Company has already sold five million cards and it is now set to increase the distribution ahead of the next season of IPL.

MoU for theme park in India

Paramount Licensing Inc., the licensing entity of Paramount Pictures Corporation and infrastructure developer Horizon Infrastructure have recently inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) implying a feasibility study to explore the potential for developing a Paramount-branded theme park in India.

As per the terms of the agreement, Horizon Infrastructure has been granted rights to explore and evaluate the feasibility for the project whereas Paramount will develop creative concepts.

With regards to the theme park study, Horizon will complete the economic feasibility to assess the financial viability of the project and Paramount will utilise its experience in brand licensing and its film library to provide theming for the project among other things.

Beanstalk to launch Paris Hilton eyewear

Agent Beanstalk has recently appointed Asia’s well known OEM & Design Company to create an exclusive line of Paris Hilton eyewear range including optical frames, sunglasses and coloured contact lenses for the Asian market under the Paris Hilton Eyewear trademark.

The line is expected to be launched by Hilton herself at the Shanghai Optical Fair in February 2012. It will be sold in department stores and speciality jewellery shops across the region including China, Hong Kong, Japan and Malaysia among others.

Jakks Pacific bags Men in Black 3

Jakks Pacific has recently inked a master toy agreement with Sony Pictures Consumer Products for the 3D film Men in Black 3, which is set to hit theaters by May 25, 2012. Planned well in advance, the toys will be released next spring to support the film's opening.

As per the agreement, Jakks will develop and produce action figures, accessories, play sets, role play, youth electronics, novelties, games and puzzles and Halloween costumes for the Men in Black franchise. The line of products is expected to complement the film’s fun, high tech and action-packed themes to entertain families long after they leave the theater.

Bradford License India (BLI) has been recently signed up by Oxford Limited to find partners to adapt Oxford brand into apparel, educational toys, stationery, gifts and home linen in the country. Oxford Limited runs University of Oxford Shop and manages the global brand licensing programme of the 800-year-old hallowed British University.

Angry Birds forays into baby gear

Rovio, Angry Birds’ developer is set to get into baby products after the Finnish company's foray into toys paid off well. Angry Birds boasts of more than 40 million players each month and it's one of the top apps on Apple Inc.'s mobile platform as well.

According to sources, Rovio has sold roughly 7 million Angry Birds toys and gets a ‘sizable proportion’ of its revenue from licensing and merchandising.

The new baby products range includes blankets and clothes made by Swaddle Designs, covered with Angry Birds characters from the game.

The first deal for American Greetings Properties' Holly Hobbie brand has been recently confirmed in the country with Lilliput Department Stores carrying classic Holly Hobbie apparel and accessories for toddlers and children, with the line launching in November.

Lilliput, with 250 stores in India, also has a growing presence in China, the Middle East and Asia. Liliput also takes part in a number of cross promotions with selected multi-brand outlets such as Shoppers Stop, Lifestyle, Pyramid, Ebony and Pantaloons.

BBC opens 'edutainment' centre in Shanghai

BBC Worldwide has recently opened the doors of its very first In the Night Garden 'edutainment' centre in Shanghai, China.

The centre aims to provide a place for children to play in an educational environment, featuring the characters from the hit Ragdoll show and is developed by licensee Ladder which manages 250 similar centres across Greater China and will operate a further Night Garden centre in Hangzhou and a third in Shanghai by the end of the summer.

A further two are also planned to be launched by the end of the year.

Puma extends Ferrari partnership

Sportswear company-Puma has recently announced a long-term extension to its existing six year licensing partnership with sports car marker and Formula One racing team-Ferrari.

The extension of the agreement will see the German company continue to develop Ferrari-branded products, as well as supplying team and race wear for Scuderia Ferrari, the Italian company’s Grand Prix team.

It is forecasted, by both the companies that Ferrari-branded apparel, footwear and accessories is set to increase as the Formula One racing calendar expands into new markets.

Also, a new collection of merchandise is set to be launched at the end of 2011.

Real estate firm’s stint with licensing

One of India's leading real estate companies-Nirmal Lifestyle has recently inked a 10-year licensing deal with International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) which is the governing body for athletics worldwide. The initiative aims to develop athletics in India and encourage greater participation in the sport.

As per the deal, the Company will have an exclusive right to use IAAF logo and trademark for development of IAAF certified training facilities, academies and clubs in the country. IAAF’s role shall be to provide technical and professional expertise, consultation, coaching and necessary training for establishing and running world class athletics infrastructure by way of designs, plans, specifications and technical inputs.

The deal will not only contribute in improving sporting performances in India but will also positively impact India's position on the sports stage globally by the joint work towards spreading awareness about athletics in India.

Oxford Limited has recently signed up with Bradford License India (BLI) as its new agent for the territory. BLI joins Performance Brands in Oxford's agent portfolio, which was appointed in February to handle UK and Europe.

Given that the Indian market is set to expand in the times to come and is presenting some exciting licensing opportunities, BLI is set to offer the required expertise to Oxford in locating target licensees in the country. On way: Disney Baby stores

The Walt Disney Co., as part of its efforts to capture future Disney well in advance, is set to open its first Disney Baby store next year at the Americana in Glendale.

The Company plans to showcase the best of its new infant line, a category that the licensing juggernaut does not currently dominate.

The retail stores would provide a great opportunity to ring forth the same as interactive platforms with parents and accordingly refine product offerings. It’s a concerted corporate effort on the part of Disney, to reach younger children.

Reliance Brands Timberland to open seven new stores

The Timberland Company, a US based manufacturer and retailer of outdoor wear, especially footwear, has recently announced its plans to expand the number of stores in India. The Company has a partnership with Reliance Brands, a special format of Reliance Retail Limited, which implies a license-cum-distribution agreement.

Following the licensing agreement, Timberland runs six stores across prime locations in India, including Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and more recently Ludhiana. Reliance Brands Timberland is set to establish seven new stores by the end of 2011, taking the total store count to thirteen. These new stores will be set up in the cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and New Delhi.

New merchandising program for Chipmunks

With the big screen debut of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked this holiday season, Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, along with Bagdasarian Productions, a year-long merchandising program is being kicked for the same. The program will introduce a new girl-skewing branding initiative based on The Chipettes – the female rock stars of the group.

Chipwrecked will be the focus of new character art and graphics with themes tied to key retail selling windows such as back-to-school, holiday and spring. Other themes will include rock ‘n’ roll, sports, cheerleading and nautical.

New partners on board include Just Play for basic, feature and novelty plush lines, with Vivid Imaginations as the UK distributor for the products. In the interactive space, Majesco will take the lead (video games) and Ty will continue to produce their own special lines in the toy category.

HarperCollins is on board with a wide publishing program which will be accompanied by Bendon Publishing who will take care of board and coloring books along with flashcards and workbooks.

Apparel and accessory lines will come from U.S. and Canadian companies such as Isaac Morris Limited, H.E.R. Accessories, and Berkshire Fashions etc.

WWE merchandise for India

Mumbai-based Dream Theatre recently inked a licensing deal with global sports entertainment firm WWE International to launch WWE branded merchandise including apparel, bags and accessories in India.

The products will be available in retail chain stores across the country including Lifestyle, Shoppers Stop, Hamleys, Pantaloons and Central among others. WWE Superstars, Divas and Hall Of Famers can be seen on more than 68 million homes across the country, given the nine hours of WWE programming broadcast each week on Ten Sports.

Future Group inks deal with Marvel

Future Group, India's largest retail chain in both value and lifestyle formats, has recently entered into a co-branding deal with Marvel, a part of The Walt Disney Company, to create new categories in the kids' personal care segment.

The Group plans to launch a kids’ range of handwash products under its private brand Caremate with Marvel characters like Snow-white and Spiderman in a co-branding deal.

"Future Group is the largest player in India and the association with the group will help both the companies to develop and grow more and more categories for children," Marvel Vice-President Roshini Bakshi said.

Post the launch of kids’ handwash, the company also wants to extend the licensing deal to shampoos and paper napkins.

Arvind Retail bags Geoffrey Beene license in India

Geoffrey Beene, LLC has licensed Arvind Retail Ltd. to manufacture and market its men’s apparel and non apparel products. Under the agreement, Arvind will have the rights to produce and market Geoffrey Beene products for its own retail format, Megamart stores, including franchisee operated Megamart branded stores, as well as wholesale in India.

The initial term of the license agreement is through 2021, with renewal options that would extend the term through 2031.

Flagship Disney store in London

In a prime High Street space, the 8,200 square-foot shop is twice the size of the previous Oxford Street location with its mission 'to provide the best 30 minutes of a child's day'. The shop is the tenth in Europe to be built around the new Disney Store concept, apart from being the largest store in Europe and the second worldwide.

Its design is due to be implemented in stores worldwide. Nine out of ten products on sale are Disney exclusives and free events are held for kids every day.
